Administration in Chennai (Madras)
The Corporation of Chennai, consisting of 155 councilors headed by the city's mayor, is the administration of Chennai. It is directly elected by city's residents. A mayor and a deputy mayor who preside over about 10 standing committees are also selected among them. The Madras High Court, the highest judicial body, whose jurisdiction extends across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, located in the city itself. A division of the Tamil Nadu Police, The Greater Chennai Police department, is the law enforcement agency in the city.
The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, houses the state executive and legislative headquarters. Chennai North, Chennai Central and Chennai South are these three Chennai parliamentary constituencies. It elects 18 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the state legislature. The commissioner of police is the head of the city police force. It is the administrative control rests with the Tamil Nadu Home Ministry. The Metropolitan suburbs are policed by the Chennai Metropolitan Police. The outer district suburbs are policed by the Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur police departments.
